Family Friendly Route - Braintree (Flitch Way) - Suitable for Families with Children Under 10 years Old
This route is largely flat and traffic free, suitable for families with children under 10 years old. The route includes lots for children to see and do and for extra fun there is a quiz on each map as you cycle round.
This is the perfect cycling route for families with young children. The route starts and finishes at Braintree Train Station and travels along the Flitch Way, a former railway track. Once upon a time the Flitch Way was a railway line which first opened in 1869. After passenger services stopped in 1952, it continued as a freight line until 1971, with the track being removed shortly after.
There are plenty of opportunities to stop such as at The Booking Hall Cafe and once you’ve had your coffee and cake fill, the Carriage Museum may be open! It’s closed Tuesdays and Wednesdays but does still rely on volunteers so opening times may vary. Inside is a model railway and a display about the history of the railway line.
On route is Great Notley Country Park, another opportunity to refuel and to also explore the 100 acres of open space as well as Essex’s longest kid’s play trail. Families can jump, swing, slide, crawl and climb their way around the 1.2km of fun including giant seesaws, swing scales, rope climbers, slides, forts and a large sand play area.
