Explore Cycle Route – Rayne and Steeple Bumpstead

This rural routes takes in picturesque villages such as Finchingfield, Great Bardfield and Rayne.

Take the opportunity to explore the village of Rayne which has some 67 Grade I and II listed structures in the village, with the All Saints Parish Church as a centre for the village community for over 1000 years.

Great Bardfield Vineyard is close to the route and worth a detour to visit.  The Vineyard is on a rural estate with established and new vines, shop, Grade 1 Listed Barn, accommodation, walled gardens, woodland and alpacas.

Steeple Bumpstead was one of the first villages in the country to have its own village policeman when county policing came into being in Essex. In 1840, William Rattigan was one of the first Essex Police Officers to be assigned a village beat. There was a police officer stationed in the village for 160 years from 1840 to 2000 when the last 'bobby', Ray Howard, retired.

This route is largely on quiet roads, suitable for adults, giving you the option of either 10mile, 20 mile or 30 mile rides.  The routes include lots to see and plenty of opportunities to stop and refuel.
